Issue 1343 – Blowing in the Wind – January 13, 2024
The wind has finally stopped howling here after several days of strong gusts. It was so powerful that it knocked out power in some areas.
Even under the covered-in porch, the wind blew the furniture around. We finally gave up on putting it back in place again until the winds died.
The wind was strong enough to topple the basketball hoop despite the base being filled with sand and covered with heavy concrete blocks. Heavy adults hang off the rim without moving it, so the gusts must have been powerful.
However, we are grateful that we didn’t suffer any significant damage. Although there will be a need for cleanup in many areas due to falling branches and possibly even some trees, we’re glad the worst is over.
We all know that wind is a force to be reckoned with. The Scriptures often liken the movement of the Holy Spirit to the wind.
One familiar passage comes to mind.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:1-8
The Spirit of God moves where and when He wishes it to. We can see Him at work, but we cannot manufacture His moving or control it.
The Spirit touches people’s hearts as He alone decides. We cannot “make” someone accept Christ. All we can do is to share Christ. God is responsible for the results.
We cannot coerce God into working a miracle or manifesting in a particular way. God doesn’t bargain and cannot be bought off.
Fortunately, God has given us a way to talk with HIm. We can pray, and He will answer by His will.
The Lord is all-knowing and all-powerful. He is perfectly just, holy and loving. That means that whether He moves in the direction we asked or not, we can trust that He will act in the best way for all concerned.
We can delight in seeing him move. We may not understand fully, but we can be in awe of His goodness and power.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
