Issue 1346 – Priorities – January 17, 2024

It snowed last night and is forecast to continue to do so for most of the day. There isn’t a lot; perhaps five inches has accumulated so far. I cancelled my Aquafit class and my barbershop appointment. The schools have declared a snow day, so we will have the granddaughters as well. They weren’t the reason I cancelled; they were just a bonus for staying home.
It doesn’t snow often on the coast. That means snow removal is slow (often as a result of melt), and drivers don’t know how to handle their vehicles. It’s a dangerous situation. There will be plenty of fender-benders and likely a fatality or two across the province before the snow stops.
In my youth, I likely would have mocked people who cancelled for such a small amount of snow. You didn’t stop activities for small things like snow. Many times I drove through raging blizzards for hours on end. Now, in fairness, more than once, I ended up in a ditch, or more close brushes with death while winter driving.
I wouldn’t miss work for inclement weather; in retrospect, my pride wouldn’t allow that. Now that I am retired, I view things a little differently. Why risk my life and that of others for such things?
If I worked providing an essential service, I could see going out. Now, I don’t “need to,” so I won’t. A little inconvenience caused by shuffling appointments is a small price to pay for not endangering myself and others. Snow and senior citizens often don’t mix well together.
If you have to drive out there today (and many people do), be safe.
My priorities have changed. Looking back on my life, I can see many places that statement would be equally true. Some of the changes are inevitable cycles in life, and some are hopefully wisdom-induced. I’ve learned I don’t always have to be right (but I confess, that I prefer it still). I’m learning that the world doesn’t revolve around me (and grateful for that.) I’ve realized that I probably never was as good as I used to think I was )oh, the arrogance of my youth.)
Over the years, my priorities have shifted from me first, me too, family and stuff (not always in that order or as clear cut). Now the are Jesus and his kingdom, my wife, my sons, my son’s families. My actions don’t always bear that out, but it is the way I am trying to live.
I have realized (and am continuing to do so )that the teacher was right.
Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:10
The end of the matter; all has been heard. fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13:14
Jesus put it this way,
…seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33
May the priorities of your life align with those of our Lord.
Be blessed
