Issue 1367 – Squawk – February 10, 2024

There is a scene in the animated movie “Little Nemo” where a flock of gulls are arguing over some food. All you hear is the annoying squawk of gulls crying out, “Mine. Mine. Mine.”
Ever since seeing that scene, when I hear a gull, it sounds like it is crying out, “Mine. Mine. Mine.”
Sometimes, our prayer life sounds like the squawking of gulls. We spend all our time talking at God and asking for the things we want. Lord, give me this! Lord, do that for me! Lord, I want. Lord, I need. Mine. Mine. Mine.
There is nothing wrong with asking for the things on our hearts, but prayer is meant to be a conversation, not a shopping list. Conversation is a two-way street. Yes, we can talk, but we must also take the time to listen.
We are told to be still before the Lord.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way over, the man who carries out evil devices! Psalm 37:7
Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
In those quiet moments of listening, we often hear Him speak to us. We know that, so why do we spend so little time being still with Him?
Sometimes, it is the enemy keeping us too busy. Other times, we want to avoid hearing what He has to say. We already know some areas where our life is not right before Him, and we do not like to listen to the correction.
Sometimes, it is because we fear what He might say. He might tell us that He wants us to do something out of our comfort zone. He might tell us to rearrange the priorities in our lives to leave more time for Him. He might tell us to “go and sin no more.”
Like little children with fingers in their ears singing “La la la” loudly, we try to pretend that it does not matter. If we do “not listen” long enough, we will not have to obey.
It does not work that way. “No Lord” is an oxymoron. If He is the Lord of your life, you will want to walk in obedience. We are called to walk in obedience whether we want to or not.
Until next time, may you truly take time to listen and apply what you hear to your life
