Issue 1370 – Hold-Up Men – February 14, 2024

Happy Valentine’s Day! May your life be filled with the love of God.
What came to mind as you read the title of today’s Gleanings, “Hold-up Men”? When I think of the term, I think of scenes from the old westerns I watched growing up with bandits robbing a stage or a bank.
Did you know there were hold-up men in the Bible?
Aaron and Hur were among the first hold-up men in the Bible. Okay, not in the traditional sense of being stick-up artists, but their “holding up” of Moses played an integral part in the victory over the Amalekites.
They assisted Moses in holding his people up to God. When Moses was holding up the staff, his people were winning the battle. When he lowered the staff because of fatigue, the tide turned in favour of the enemy.
Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword. Exodus 17:8-13
This passage is an excellent analogy for intercessory prayer.
Prayer can work the same way. Sometimes, we get too busy or too tired to keep praying. Occasionally, if you are like me, you forget. If we are teamed up with some “hold up” partners, they will assist us during those times. When we are slipping, their prayers continue to carry the situation.
Find a prayer partner or two. Share prayer concerns and work in tandem to keep those people and situations of concern in prayer. When one of you forgets, is too busy or tired, the other will cover, holding up your arms to God.
“…take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,” Ephesians 6:17- 18
The Biblical mandate for prayer is clearly evident in many places in Scripture. We are called to pray at all times for all things. Find a hold-up person to help you. Be someone else’s spiritual Aaron and Hur.
Be blessed
