Issue 1450 – Windmills – May 17, 2024

Yesterday was windy; it never stopped blowing. The wind came from the east, the west, and the north, always changing but without a discernible pattern. https://www.facebook.com/reel/299394663226151
The wind blows where it will blow, and we can’t change that. We can erect structures that provide small localized changes or block the wind, but the wind itself will not change direction to suit our desires.
It is worth noting the frequent occurrence of the words’ breath’ and ‘wind’ in the Bible. In both Greek and Hebrew, these words often carry the meaning of ‘spirit ‘. They remind us that the Spirit of God moves according to His divine will and timing.
This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3:2-8
If we want to be filled with the Spirit, does that mean we must jump up and around constantly trying to catch Him? I know many Christians who do just that; they move from event to event, church to church, always trying to catch up with what they believe to be the latest move of God. Going to where the wind was is no guarantee of catching it.
So what do we do? We need to be like a windmill. Windmills were designed to be propelled by the wind, no matter which direction it’s blowing, in order to generate power. To be empowered by the Holy Spirit, we must do the same.
A slight, steady wind can move a windmill blades just as much (or more so than) a periodic gust. The windmill doesn’t chase the wind; it is prepared to work with it.
The windmill doesn’t get up and move; it is simply ready to work when the wind comes by. To be empowered by the Spirit, we must be sensitive to Him and prepared to follow Him.
We serve, pray, study and fellowship together. We listen for His voice and follow. We submit to Him when he calls.
The Spirit can (and does) move wherever His people are. We can be ready to move with Him or miss out. You don’t have to move to the latest whiz-bang, flashy, shiny, travelling salvation show to find Him.
The Spirit can and does work in everyday Christians like you and me. He works just as hard in small churches as in big ones.
The Holy Spirit is working here and now. Are you? Do you have your eyes open to see it?
Be blessed
