Issue 1472 – Soaring Eagle – June 12, 2024

Yesterday evening, under cloudy, windy skies, we sat at a baseball diamond in Chilliwack, watching two of our granddaughters playing softball.
At one point, a good-sized bald eagle appeared, soaring across the sky above the diamond and out across the farmer’s fields beyond. I watched it for a brief while until I lost sight of it against the clouds.
When I was a teen, bald eagles were an endangered species and a rare sight. Now, they are off the endangered list and a commonplace sight.
Even though we see eagles regularly, something about them causes me to stop and watch them fly. Perhaps it is their size or the ease with which they drift effortlessly across the skies.
Maybe it’s their size. A female baldie can be up to 45 inches in length, have a wing span of eight feet, and weigh up to 15 pounds(males are slightly smaller). That’s a big bird, and it catches your eye.
There are other eagles in the world larger than the bald eagle, but the bald eagle is the only eagle species found exclusively in North America.
The Bible uses eagles as many metaphors. They can represent power and strength, God’s judgement, His protection, His handiwork in creation, and more.
There are eagle verses that speak to my spirit when times seem to get hard.
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:28-31
You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Exodus 19:14
Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, the Lord alone guided him, no foreign god was with him. Deuteronomy 32:11-12
When you see an eagle in flight, take a moment to remember God’s power, provision and protection and give Him the glory that is due.
Be blessed
