Issue 1496 – Planting Corn – July 11, 2024

The run-down cafe was full except for one table for two with a single seat open. The other seat had an old farmer sitting in it. I approached and asked if I could join him, and he welcomed me.
I was young and just headed out for basic training in the Canadian Armed Forces. The old gentleman seemed ancient to me, even older than my grandparents. Looking back, he was probably in his 60’s.
He was a pleasant fellow and talked to me about every topic under the sun. I only recall a little of our conversation except for a tidbit. He told me, “Always remember that if you plant beans, you’ll get beans. If you plant corn, you’re going to get corn. So be careful what you plant.”
I thought that was so obvious that I didn’t even bother thinking about it. Of course, you get whatever crop you plant. I was never going to be a farmer, so his advice went in one ear and out the other.
It wasn’t until years later, when the conversation came back as a random memory, that I realized the old gentleman hadn’t been talking about farming at all. He was talking about the old adage, “You reap what you sow.”
The Bible speaks of that very thing.
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load.Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:1-10
We have a choice. We can sow the things of this world, or we can sow the things of God.
Our harvest will be what we sow. The fruit will be favorable if we plant love, service, truth, joy, and unity. If we plan bitterness, hatred, disharmony, self-centeredness, and the like, that’s what we shall get back.
If we spend our days complaining, we can expect misery. We can expect a better day if we count our blessings and walk in gratitude.
It seems so obvious as to be cliche, yet it is true. We harvest what we plant.
Until next time, may you sow seeds of love and godliness.
Be blessed

Gleanings From The Word
Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary life.
Soli Deo Gloria (For the glory of God alone)
Never let the enemy tell you that you are worthless or insignificant. Your value in God’s eyes is so great that it was worth dying for. You are a blessing to the world. You are so precious to God that his plan for heaven will not be complete without you.
