Issue 1698 – Morning Song – April 1, 2025

On Saturday morning, I stood beside my car, waiting for the ferry. Beside me was some undeveloped marshy parkland. The cattails were filled with red-winged blackbirds, who were serenading the world.
I’m not certain what it is about the sound of a red-winged blackbird’s call, but to me, it is always a pleasant sound. I was reminded of the song performed by Cat Stevens (
wrote the lyrics).
Morning has broken, like the first morning.
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning.
Praise for the springing fresh from the word.
Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from heaven.
Like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden.
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass.
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning.
Born of the one light, Eden saw play.
Praise with elation, praise every morning,
God’s recreation of the new day
While there is a tragedy in the fact that Mr. Stevens missed the boat and turned to Islam, the lyrics of that song capture a morning blackbird song.
The author of the lyrics, Miss Farjeon, was a prolific, award-winning poet, writer, and storyteller who passed away in 1965. A local vicar commissioned her to write the lyrics for a hymnbook. I don’t know if she had a faith or not.
God’s recreation of the new day is truly something to celebrate. No matter what the night before has brought us, we are blessed with a fresh start, a new beginning in the morning.
But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;his mercies never come to an end;they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:21-23 NIV
I can’t think of a single person who hasn’t needed a fresh start or a new beginning at various points in life. Jesus is that start. Like the new day, he brings us fresh promise.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
The new dawn of His resurrection came after the darkness of Jesus’ internment after His death and crucifixion. I don’t know if they have blackbirds in Israel, but I can’t imagine that the garden of Gethsemane was quiet that morning. I am sure the birds must have been singing the triumph of a new day, even though they would not have understood His rising.
A new morning, a new start, every day. Praise God!
Until next time, I’ll borrow a line from Miss Farjeon: Praise with elation, praise every morning God’s recreation of the new day.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
