Issue 1759 – Bread _ June 26, 2025

basket of assorted breads and buns

I confess that I have a weakness for bread, especially freshly  baked, just out of the oven, slathered with butter. Leavened, unleavened, white, brown, pumpernickel, sourdough, whole grains, mixed grains, I enjoy them all.

Some of my earliest memories involve watching my mom mix bread dough and the aroma of fresh-baked bread.

Bread is a staple of life, and most (if not all) cultures have some form of it. The style and grains may vary, but almost anywhere on the globe, you will find some bread.

The earliest known breads are thought to be almost as old as humanity, and archeological evidence suggests that they were likely made of cattail root. Most breads were unleavened, or some form of wild “sourdough,” until the 1800s.

According to one source, “In 1859, Louis Pasteur discovered how yeast worked, and with that, the mass production of yeast began. Charles Fleischman began selling yeast cells in test tubes to bakers in 1863. By 1868, Fleischman was wrapping yeast in tin foil. At the turn of the century, advertisements began popping up in newspapers and journals for yeast “of the purest quality.” From that point, leavened breads took off and became the norm in much of the world.

Bread holds significant importance in the Bible. It can represent fellowship, God’s provision, purity, a sacred offering, communion with God, and even the Word of God.

The Lord himself even used it as a metaphor for himself.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:36-40

He is the ultimate source and sustainer of life.

The next time you enjoy a slice of bread, take a moment and remember the Christ. Give Him praise and thanks.
