Issue 688 – Nesting – March 19, 2022

Yesterday Kathy and I took a meander down the Stoney Creek Trail. The portion we walk is a bit of a short but beautiful walk. A fenced-in off-leash dog park parallels the early part of the path, and the trail is busy with dog walkers. That means we both get to do our share of puppy visiting while getting our walk in.
As we walked, a quick movement in the trees caught my eye. I saw a small bird fly onto the end of a recently broken-off branch. We stopped and watched a chickadee making a home in the hollow of that branch. It is that season, coming on spring, and plenty of birds will be nesting up if they haven’t already done so. We weren’t able to get a photo but enjoyed the spectacle.
People have a lot in common with birds, including the need for some sort of home. The nature of that home can vary greatly.
Here in Abbotsford, we have our share of homeless and under-housed people. They frequently make small, temporary tent communities of their own, staying until they become too much of a nuisance in a neighbourhood, then being driven off to start again in a different location.
On the opposite end of the spectrum are the massive multi-family dwellings primarily being built by some of the local South Asian families. These often house the patriarch and matriarch of the family, as many as four or five adult children, their spouses and children—a family community in one home.
At least half of the street we live on is three-generational homes. The grandparents have a suite, with the parents and their children in the rest of the home. It is a practical way of affording the overpriced real estate market here in the lower mainland. The average house price here is more than a million dollars.
The choice of where and how we live are important decisions.
People expend a great deal of time, money and effort on their homes. Yet, they often don’t think that this world is not our final home.
Believers will spend their eternity in glory and non-believers in eternal torment.
For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. Hebrews 13:14
In this case, I think the Living Bible paints a more precise image.
For this world is not our home; we are looking forward to our everlasting home in heaven. Hebrews 13:14 TLV
It is prudent to maintain our homes and keep them comfortable, safe and even marketable. Yet we cannot afford to neglect our heavenly home.
We live in a comfortable home, in a nice neighbourhood in a lovely safe community. Part of our family lives in the same house. From that perspective, I feel incredibly blessed.
I don’t spend every waking moment pining for heaven, but there is a part of me that yearns to be in my final home, in the company of my Lord and Saviour and all my true family in Christ.
I’m investing now for that home with the Lord. Time spent in the Word and the fellowship of believers helps me prepare for that home. My works don’t buy me entrance, that Christ has already paid, and my faith in Him grants me the right to go.
Is your eternal home in glory secured? If not, you need to attend to that today. If it is, what are you doing to prepare for living there?
