Issue 690 – Protective Feathers – March 21, 2022

I walked into the donut shop for my morning coffee. Canadians love their coffee and donuts; I recently read that we have more donut shops per capita than any place globally. They are a vital component of Canadian social life, like pubs are in Britain.
Sitting at a table were four police officers. They were big guys, an intimidating-looking crew, even though they laughed and seemed very friendly.
These gentlemen looked like they could lift your car off you at an accident scene. Perhaps that is a bit of an exaggeration, but they certainly looked like men you wanted beside you if there was trouble brewing.
As big as all four were, I think the actual intimidation came from the size of their sidearms and their bullet-resistant Kevlar vests. It wasn’t that many years ago that the only police officers who had Kevlar vests were the tactical guys, and they only wore them when responding to a call. Now every officer wears one all the time.
It’s a sad commentary on our society, but I understand the need for them to carry large-capacity side arms and wear protective vests. They have a dangerous job, and their gear is an investment in their safety and our protection.
We all invest in something to keep us safe. We buy insurance. Some people purchase alarm systems, guns, dogs and more. Many people live behind fences with big gates or even in gated communities. It seems that more and more frequently, I see security guards in stores.
I’m all for keeping safe; ultimately, my true safety and security are in feathers.
Yes, you read that right; it is in feathers!
How in the world can there be safety or refuge in feathers? They can’t be found in goose or duck feathers or any other conventional feather you can name.
Those types of feathers can’t protect anyone. Sewn into a vest or a winter coat, they can keep out the winter cold. They can keep a bed warm in a duvet, but they cannot protect a person.
Okay, I confess, not physical feathers, but feathers nonetheless. The Psalmist paints some beautiful pictures.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. ” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge;
Psalm 91:2-4
We find safety under the mighty wings of our Lord.
Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings Psalm 17:8
How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 36:7
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. Psalm 57:1
Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Psalm 61:4
you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. Psalm 63:7-8
I’m all for Kevlar vests. Alarms and insurance can be wise investments. Still, for absolute security and refuge, I’ll trust in the “feathers” of God.
Bad things may still happen, but the Lord has my future planned. He secures my eternal peace and security.
Until next time, may you find rest in the shadow of His comforting wings.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
