Issue 738 – Walking Talking Trees – May 8, 2022

This is Treebeard, my friend Priscilla’s houseplant. She named it because it reminded her of the ent characters in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. If you are not familiar with ents, they are giant tree-like beings who can walk and talk. They are similar in some ways to talking trees found in literature around the world.
Now, we all know that trees can’t walk and talk. Don’t we? Some “walking” palm trees in Ecuador move about 2 cm a day.
According to one biologist, “As the soil erodes, the tree grows new, long roots that find new and more solid ground, sometimes up to 20m then, slowly, as the roots settle in the new soil and the tree bends patiently toward the new roots, the old roots slowly lift into the air. The whole process for the tree to relocate to a new place with better sunlight and more solid ground can take a couple of years.”
Now I don’t suppose that 2 cm a day could really be considered walking, but I find the idea intriguing. What would trees do or say if they could walk and talk?
In some ways, the answer to that question would be nothing more than silly speculation. Yet, a tree hundreds of years old that could talk would surely be able to testify to seeing the hand of God at work.
The whole of creation is designed as a signboard that points people to Christ and to give God glory.
All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name. Psalm 68:4
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:18-20
The created order was cursed when sin entered, and it longs for a new day with the Lord.
For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. Romans 8:19
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.
Psalm 96:11-13
From a distance, all trees seem to look pretty much the same. Yet, when I walk through a forest or an orchard, every tree is different somehow. They have grown and changed based on their particular microclimate and circumstance. The differences may be so subtle as to be almost indiscernible or so large as to be impossible to miss.
Some may be straight, while others are twisted. There may be broken limbs, or holes drilled by woodpeckers. This one is thriving while that one barely holds onto life. Physical differences, to be sure, but if trees could talk, each would have a unique story about the Lord.
How much more so is that with people? No two of us are alike, and we all have individual faith and life journeys. All of us have a tale to tell about how God has saved us and changed us.
What has God done in your life and the lives of those around you? Take some time today and count those blessings and sing His praises.
