Issue 740 – Coffee, Coffee, Coffee – May 10, 2022

I must confess here that I really enjoy coffee. Now, those who know me recognize that it isn’t much of a confession or secret.
I’m careful to drink my coffee only in moderation, a single cup or, on most days, two cups, but I do enjoy it. Now I know some Christians don’t drink coffee, and I respect their position, but I believe that drinking coffee is one of those areas where we have liberty.
Most days, I enjoy a cup first thing in the morning while having my quiet time and preparing Gleanings. Some mornings I will have a second cup.
Years ago, when I worked as a small business banker, I would have a cup as I prepared to work and another as I drove there. After arriving at the branch, I used to start a cup as soon as I got to work (if I didn’t already have one with me) and continue drinking coffee non-stop until bedtime. That kind of consumption was decidedly unhealthy.
I enjoy regular coffee, espresso, cappuccino, iced cappuccino, cappuccino flavoured milkshakes and more. I enjoy coffee with two cream and two sugars, but that’s not very good for me, so I drink it with simply a little cream most of the time.
Not everyone is a coffee fan, so perhaps for you, it’s cola, tea or something different that you enjoy on your little breaks during the day.
Many people younger than I am, consume energy drinks like I used to drink coffee. I’m not sure that is a wiser alternative.
By now, you’re probably wondering where on earth I’m going this morning. I was thinking the other day about people who tell me they have no time to pray or read their Bible.
You can read the entire Bible in a year in about 15 minutes a day. That’s about the length of one coffee break.
That got me thinking that we’d all know our Bibles better if we used one coffee break a day to read and pray. If we gave up that cup of coffee as well, we would all be a little healthier in the long run.
The Bible repeatedly speaks of the value of knowing Scripture:
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:1-3
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:1
I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Psalm 119:15-16
If the Bible is God’s word to humanity (and it is), we need to know what it says. The only way to know it is to read it and study it.
Will you give up one cup of coffee a day to read it and know God better?
Until next time, no matter how much you enjoy your coffee, may God be far more important to you.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
