Issue 748 – Rivers of Grace – May 18, 2022

Near our former home in Clearwater is one of many waterfalls that I love to visit. Spahats Falls is located in Wells Gray Park, only about a fifteen minute drive from town, with plenty of parking and only a short but beautiful walk in to the falls.
Spahats Creek drops off the canyon edge falling to a cave-like basin about 50 feet from the rim. The cave grows slowly year after year from the river pouring down into it. Each year it gets a little deeper as the bedrock slowly erodes.
It’s almost as if the basin wants to keep all the water for itself because it fears going dry and goes to great lengths to keep the river from going anyplace else.
Fortunately, the power falling water overwhelms the desire of the basin, and the water drops another 180 feet or so to the valley floor. The waters land in another pool that seems to want to hold the water back.
After churning around in the pool, the water continues its downstream rush to the Clearwater River. Eventually, it flows into the North Thompson system and to the Pacific. These falls pour countless gallons of water every moment of the day, all year long. The river brings life to all that is downstream despite the best efforts of the basin to hold it in.
I’m reminded of God’s marvellous grace when I think of those falls. He pours rivers of mercy, healing, blessing, joy, peace and spiritual gifts into the lives of those who believe on Him.
Like the cave-like basin and the pool below it, we try to keep it all to ourselves. We want the blessings to stay in our lives and hesitate to share them with others, so we build “me and mine” floodgates to hold the blessing in. It is almost as if we are afraid that if we share the blessings and grace that, somehow, God’s supply of those marvellous gifts might run dry.
Or perhaps we are so used to seeing them that we have become oblivious to them. We neglect to share if that is the case because we don’t recognize how much God has blessed us. That, too, is a sad state of affairs.
Ironically, when we open the floodgates and let the grace and mercy flow into the lives of those around us, we’re doubly blessed. God not only continues to pour into our lives, but we see the blessing of others respond to his life-giving, sustaining gift.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. Psalm 46:4-5
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams. Isaiah 44:3-4
When we respond to the love of God by loving others, the blessings flow to them.
God will bless who He wishes, with or without us. When we are stingy with our love, forgiveness and blessing, we are the ones who miss out. Trying to hold tight to them causes them to dry up more quickly.
Until next time, may you open wide and let the streams of God’s grace and mercy flow through you to bring life to others.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
