Issue 762 – Making the Most of It – June 1, 2022

1957 Ford F100 similar to the one I used to have.

I was perusing the Gleanings archives this morning and came across this one from 2006. I  thought I would rerun it this morning because it remains true today

Perhaps you can relate.

The morning was off to a bad start, and I was running late. I waited somewhat impatiently, but the red light stubbornly wanted to stay that colour. I could feel his presence from behind long before I could see or hear him. A young guy in a beat-up old sports car pulled up. The stereo subwoofers I had felt blaring were probably worth more than his car. The volume on the stereo was set loud enough to allow everyone within a block’s radius to share his music.

I mumbled something to myself about the volume of his “so-called music.” Then it hit me. I had gotten older, and time had slipped away somewhere along the line. It seemed like just yesterday that I was in my teens. I drove around with the volume of my 1957 Ford F100 pickup truck’s stereo cranked to the max, and my parents were complaining about the “music” I enjoyed.

The years had flown past. I remembered my parent’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary as if it were yesterday. Yet, Kathy and I passed that milestone ourselves sometime back.

Later, I looked in the mirror and realized that a slim, young guy was no longer looking back at me. It was true! I am pushing fifty. I remember when the maxim “Don’t trust anyone over thirty” made sense.” I remembered when fifty seemed so old. Now my friends in their seventies do not seem old to me at all.

Life passes by quickly. I can account for most of it, but it seems to have accelerated in pace and moved by like a blur.

As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. Psalm 103:15-16

A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. Ecclesiastes 1:4

As I grow a little older, the urgency to tell others about Jesus seems more important to me. I am past the halfway point of the average life expectancy in this country (actually, I’m around two-thirds, but who is counting?), and I want to make the best use of the time I have left.

I am not as wise as old King Solomon, although I am wise enough to have stuck to one wife and avoid the concubine thing. I have come to recognize the wisdom in his words.

The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

I do not know if you are nine or ninety, but I do know that none of us knows how much time God has given us. If you are nine, ninety will be here before you know it. If you are ninety, the nine probably seems not all that long ago. No matter how old you are, use the time you have to bring God glory. It is the best use of your time.

Until next time, may everything you turn your hands to be pleasing in the sight of Father.

Hallelu Yah (Praise God)

Be blessed.

Kevin.
