Issue #776 – Flood Warning – June 15, 2022

Much of the province is under a flood warning. High rainfall and a late snow melt are combining to be a recipe for potential disaster in many places. At least two communities, Sparwood and Kelowna, have declared local states of emergency due to flooding. More communities will likely follow suit.
There was a colossal flood warning in the Old Testament.
Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence. And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. Genesis 6:11-18
You know the story. People ignored Noah’s preaching about righteousness, the ark was built, and the earth flooded. Only Noah, his family and the animals on board survived.
Afterwards, God made a covenant with Noah.
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.” Genesis 9:8-17
When we see a rainbow in the sky today, we should stop and reflect, but not only in remembrance of God’s covenantal relationship with Noah.
The world today is equally, if not more depraved that the people of Noah’s generation. Sin of every kind, both imaginable and unimaginable, is not only present but often celebrated.
The Lord would be within His rights to destroy the earth He created. Eventually, His perfect and holy wrath must be exercised.
The rainbow ought to remind us of His mercy. His wrath is held in abeyance for now. There will come a day of reckoning, a time of judgment for all people. There is a delay so that those predestined to come to Christ by faith have an opportunity.
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
When we see the rainbow, we can consider the wrath of God and remember His mercy on us. It can compel us to look at others who don’t yet know Jesus and share the truth with them. Let us lovingly and graciously warn people of the upcoming judgement and news of the saving grace of Jesus.
