Issue 779 – Wild Grasses – June 18, 2022

As I walked along the lakeshore, I was struck by the wild grasses developing their seed. It was something I have seen innumerable times but seldom stopped to look at.
At times, I grabbed a leaf and used it for a whistle or plucked the seed heads and spread the seed as I walked along. Other than that, I had never paid attention to them.
The grasses have a beauty all their own—the rich green of the stems and leaves contrasts with the golden-brown of the seed heads. Similar plants are often grown as landscape features.
A familiar piece of Scripture drifted into my brain as I looked at the grasses.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:25-34
Jesus reminded His followers that God was, is and always will be in control. No matter what is happening around us, God has His people covered.
We are called to seek the things of God, the things of eternal value. Compared to eternity, our earthly lives are incredibly short. Even the ancient men and women in the antediluvian (pre-flood) days lived hundreds of years and had lives that pale next to eternity.
What does last?
Faith in Christ, love, peace, goodness, gentleness, self-control, compassion and the like all last. God’s Word endures. Our reconciliation to Christ lasts forever.
The kingdom of God and the fruit of the Spirit endures forever. Those are the thing worth pursuing.
The grasses in my photo died back to the roots soon after the seed set. Similarly, one day soon, all of us will pass away.
In the interim, we have peace with God, the righteousness of Christ imputed to us, the Spirit dwelling in us, and God’s promises for our eternal future.
There is a sense in which we are here today but gone tomorrow, yet with Christ, there is also a sense of eternity in the perfect kingdom of our God.
Next time you see a wildflower or a stem of fruiting wild grass, pause and give God thanks for His provision, grace and promises.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed
Kevin.
