Issue 780 – Our Father – June 19, 2022
Happy Father’s Day.
All of us have a father. He may have been spectacular and loving, he may have done the best he could, or He may have never been there at all.
Some are longing desperately to be fathers but may never experience the blessing. Others are fathers who don’t know or care that they are.
Some are fathers by choice, others by surprise. Some are biological, others are adoptive, and still, others are not fathers by traditional definition, but they filled the role of a father in your life.
Father’s day is one of those celebrations that can bring joy or sadness, depending on who your father was (is).
There was never any doubt that my father loved me. Our relationship was very strained at times for a variety of reasons, but he did his best. He passed away some years ago.
I am the proud father of two adult sons, both of whom are fathers (making me grandfather to six). Kris and Kyle have very different personalities, but both are strong fathers who love the Lord. That is a gift from God.
Whatever your earthly father is like, all believers have a Father who is loving and perfect. He is our Father in the sense that He created us, but not all people are His children. The Creator of Heaven and Earth loves all people, but not all people are His children.
Christian believers are God’s children because our Heavenly Father purchased and adopted us into the family. The Lord gave us the faith to become believers, and He seals the deal with the Spirit.
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 1 John 3:1-3
The Lord brought us into the family and made us heirs with Christ.
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:16-17
In our modern society, we don’t appreciate how high an affirmation and privilege that is. Yet, in ancient Judaism, the birthright was a tremendous deal. In the Roman world of Jesus’ day, to be adopted and made coheir in a Roman family was a step of enormous status.
Our Heavenly Father loves us beyond measure, and He works all things for our good. He knows what we were designed to be and will fulfill our potential beyond our wildest dream. He has a spot reserved for us in glory.
Our Heavenly Father is worthy of celebration every day. Our earthly fathers, no matter who they are or their skills, are to be honoured. Let’s do so today.
Today, I also thank God for your father because, without him, there would be no you in my life.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed
Kevin.
