Issue 824 – Evening Song – August 13, 2022

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day yesterday. The weather was great, warm but not hot and sunny. We had some friends over for a light luncheon, and the Spirit was clearly at work in our time together.
Last night Kathy and I went out for “supper and the symphony.” We packed a picnic supper (quick and easy with our luncheon leftovers), grabbed our lawn chairs and headed out to Mill Lake Park. A local orchestra was providing an evening of free Symphony in the Park. It was the first post-COVID concert but is an annual event.
We were almost late in arriving, setting up our chairs some distance away from the stage just before the music started. The orchestra played God Save the Queen in recognition of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and various crowd favourites. The orchestral music was interspersed with singers and dancers. It was quite a treat.
We further treated ourselves with a cup of fresh hot coffee from a nearby Tim Hortons and fresh out of the oil, cinnamon sugar-coated mini donuts from a food truck.
We visited with friends who were also out enjoying the communal evening of music.
All in all, it was a delightful evening.
Earlier in the day, we had been walking on the Matsqui Trail along the Fraser River and were treated to a wide variety of birdsongs.
All sorts of music were in the air.
When we stop to listen, all of nature proclaims the glory of God. His praises can be heard in the brook’s babble or a mighty waterfall’s roar.
His praises can be heard in the gentle breeze’s rustle or the windstorm’s power that shakes the tops of giant redwoods.
They can be heard in the soft sound of gentle spring rainfall, of the thunderous pounding of a hailstorm on a tin roof.
The loon’s laugh, the howl of a coyote, and the hoofbeats of a startled herd of deer carry it. Praise to the Creator, honour to their Maker.
Perhaps you thought only people and angels praised God. The Bible tells us that all of creation praises Him.
All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name. Psalm 66:4
“For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Isaiah 55:12
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Psalm 19:1
Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Psalm 150
We could argue that much of that is simply figurative language, but you only have to stop and listen for a while to hear the praises of creation.
I love the moments before dawn or just after sunset. The air is filled with birds singing a chorus of praise to the Lord. It is beautiful to hear.
May you take time today to Praise the Lord and listen and hear the music of all creation praising His name.
Kevin.
