Issue 837 – Prairie Chicken Mystery – August 28, 2022

Ah, the humble but delicious grouse. Grouse are often referred to as prairie chickens. If you have seen them strutting across a road from a distance, the reason for the name is plain; they often look like chickens.
Seeing this prairie chicken on the shoulder of a gravel path brought to mind many old chicken jokes. The first and most apparent was the ancient, “Why did the chicken cross the road?”
The answer varies depending on the storyteller, but we will never really know. It is one of the imponderable things of the universe. Perhaps not one of the great mysteries of life but unknown still.
There are much bigger unanswered questions and unsolved mysteries in the world. Many people have questions about God and His works.
We can never answer every question about God or completely understand His ways. We are finite mortal beings trying to probe the infinite and immortal.
Yet the Lord has chosen to reveal himself through His Word, the Spirit, the prophets, signs and wonders and most importantly, the incarnate Son of God.
The Scriptures offer answers to many of the mysteries of life.
Two questions often asked are “Why the gospel?” and “Why the church?”
For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. Ephesians 3:1-12
We can know that the gospel brings glory to God and is for all people, and our loving God redeems unworthy sinners and brings them into a right relationship with Himself. He has ordained His church to take the message of His love and plan of redemption into the world.
God has chosen His people from before the beginning of time. A much greater mystery than the gospel is why He chooses those He does. Other than understanding it is His right to do so; I can’t even begin to answer that mystery.
Still, as believers, we can rejoice in the gospel truth and the role He has given us to proclaim it.
