Issue 838 – Exploring – August 29 2022

On Friday, Kathy and I had an errand to run in nearby Maple Ridge. Afterwards, as we returned home, we decided to explore the local area more.
We came upon a gem in the form of Whonnock Lake. Whonnock is a small natural muskeg lake between Dewdney Trunk Road and the Lougheed Highway. The word whonnock is derived from a first nations word meaning humpback (pink) salmon, the only salmon species to use Whonnock Creek as a spawning ground.
The marshy area around the lake is a favourite with local birders. Most of the local area songbirds, hummingbirds and waterfowl are seen there.
There is a nice park on the shores of the lake with a small sandy beach for swimming. A fair size playground and a gazebo for picnics or barbecuing add to the facilities.
There is also fishing for various species, including rainbow trout (stocked), black crappie, and humpback. Frogs abound, and while we didn’t see any, local children claim the Lake has the world’s most enormous tadpoles.
The Whonnock Lake Centre is located next to the park and offers a beautiful venue for weddings and other celebrations. The pier on the lake is popular for wedding photos, and an engagement photo shoot was happening there when we visited the park.
We have added the lake to our list of possible picnicking sites for the future.
There is a paradox that happens when we explore the local area. The better we know it, the more we find that we don’t really know it. We keep learning more about local history and finding hiking and recreation facilities we had never heard of.
I have found something similar in reading the Scriptures. The more I read the inerrant word of God, the more I realize I don’t know.
As the puzzle pieces come together and a beautiful picture of God and our relationship with Him unfolds, I realize that I want to know more and am drawn deeper.
I typically read the Bible cover to cover two or three times a year, along with numerous forays into individual books, passages and topics. I am astounded at how often I find myself reading or understanding something that is “new.”
It isn’t new; I have read it before, but the Spirit has illuminated it afresh for me.
The Word bears reading. Too often, we read a few familiar passages and ignore the rest. Peter confirms the veracity of Scripture and comments on how the incarnation of Christ, as the Living Word of God, ought to draw us to it.
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:19-21
The Word was designed to draw us to Christ and conform us to His image. There is a reason the Scriptures refer to themselves as a lamp for us to see by and a light for our feet.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
Invest some time in the Word daily and be delighted as you become more familiar with it and discover things you never understood or saw before.
Read the Word. Read the Word. Read the Word.

Be blessed.
