Issue 852 – Tete-Jaune Tipis – September 12, 2022

My friend Ailie took this photo on her property when she owned a resort in Tete-Jaune Cache, BC. The tipis in front of the majestic mountains invoke a sense of a time past.
Nomadic first nations tribes inhabited this general area for many generations, travelling with the ebb and flow of the fish and game population. They likely camped on this very spot along the river.
Throughout the history of humanity, there have been nomadic people groups. Sometimes their travels were dictated by seasons and the availability of food. Other times they were displaced frequently by other people groups or tribes. People are always on the move.
In our married life of 45 years, Kathy and I have moved over 20 times (including only two moves in more than 20 years). I have friends who have never left the home they were born in, something I cannot imagine.
Some people are wanderers by nature, while others are stayers (is that a word?). Some move based on circumstance and are comfortable with either staying or moving on.
We all have something in common, though, this world is not our home. It is our dwelling place for a lifetime, but all of us are headed for an eternity elsewhere. Some will move on to eternal torment without the presence of God, and others to eternal bliss with Him.
We can stake our turf for days, weeks, years or even decades, but when all is said and done, this earthly world is a temporary stopping place.
I can forget that and put too much emphasis on where I live or what I “own.” In reality, none of us owns any physical possession; we are simply stewards of the things that belong to the Lord. We may steward them well or poorly, for a short time or a lifetime, but we don’t own them.
We come into this world naked and owning nothing, which is how we leave it. Whether we live two days or 120 years, we are just stopping over for a bit on our way elsewhere.
The book of Hebrews speaks of Abraham but identifies the human condition.
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. Hebrews 11:8-10
Some of us pass through running toward God. Most pass through running away from Him. Left to our sinful ways, we run away. Fortunately, God calls us to a relationship with Him, We can listen to that call and join Him, or we can reject Him and face the consequences.
I love my temporary time on this earth and plan to enjoy it while I can. Yet, I know what God has planned for me is even better, so I look forward to what He has in store.
An old hymn captures our journey well.
This world is not my home, I’m just a-passing through,
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue;
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
Refrain: O Lord, You know I have no friend like You,
If heaven’s not my home, then, Lord, what will I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
They’re all expecting me, and that’s one thing I know
My Savior pardoned me, and now I onward go;
I know He’ll take me through though I am weak and poor,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore
I have a loving Savior up in glory-land,
I don’t expect to stop until I with Him stand;
He’s waiting now for me in heaven’s open door,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
Just up in glory-land we’ll live eternally,
The saints on every hand are shouting victory,
Their songs of sweetest praise drift back from heaven’s shore,
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore.
(Anonymous 1919)
I pray you feel the same way.
To God be the glory in this life and beyond.
Be blessed
