One morning recently, I was having a fitful sleep. Early in the morning, I had a rude awakening as I heard the scream of a train whistle cut through the night like the very pits of hell had opened, and you could hear the anguish of those suffering.

The train doesn’t run particularly close to us, and though we sometimes hear it, it is seldom loud, so the sound of sirens is nothing new. I’m so used to them that I’ve, by and large, tuned them out. 

I don’t know if it was the atmospheric conditions or something else, but the train seemed abnormally loud. The whistle was painful and mournful.

That morning in my study, I was led to the second epistle to the Corinthians. 

 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.1 Corinthians 13:1-3 

I could hear the screaming train whistle instead of a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. I could paraphrase that to fit my experience that night: “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only the rude sound of a screaming train in the night.”

Do we have the love that accompanies our faith walk? It’s a significant evidence of being born again. Without it we’re just making noise.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.  Galatians 5:22-23

I looked up along the lakeshore and saw a three- or four-year-old boy walking out of the water. He was wet well beyond his knees and muddy nearly as far. His mother was not impressed.

“What are you doing? Why were you in the water? Answer me! “

“I was..” 

“Don’t interrupt! You’re all wet and filthy! What did I tell you?” 

Finally, the boy had an opportunity to get a word out. 

“But mom, you said don’t get my new shoes dirty. I didn’t! They’re over by the bench. I took them off so I wouldn’t get them dirty. Just like you said, Mom.”

I smiled and laughed as the mom sputtered some explanation about leaving the shoes on the shore not being what she had meant. She didn’t seem as amused.

We’re often like the little boy looking to get off on some technicality. We try to achieve superficial holiness or partial obedience in our faith walk. We try to rationalize that “we’re not as bad” as someone else or that “we can’t help it.”

We may hear a call from God to do something and then come up with excuses for why we can’t or why we must have been mistaken about hearing from God.

The same behavior that made me laugh at the little boy and his mother isn’t nearly as funny when we do it to God. I believe God has a sense of humor and laughs, but never about sin.

Christ is a perfect example of someone meeting all the technicalities of the law but not being right before God. He was obedient, even unto death on a cross.

Our hearts are not as pure, and our flesh isn’t willing. 

Fortunately, believers have the Word to teach us and The Spirit to guide us. We are works in process, and God will finish what He started in us,

King David was a man who struggled and sinned greatly. Yet, he understood the value of repentance and having a clean heart before God.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! Psalm 51:1-3

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51:17

David understood that God examines our hearts. Have you checked yours lately? Is it soft toward the Lord, or has it grown hard?

Are you looking for excuses or seeking ways to follow Him better?

Now that we’ve gathered together let us make some  mindless small talk and share some superficial chitchat.

“How are you?” “Fine, and you?” “Fine, thanks.” “How about the weather we have been having?” “Yes, it is something.” “Hurrah for the local sports team!” “Did you hear about the latest office or community gossip?”

Around that point, I get stumped because I am not very good at making small talk. I have run out of things to say and have to repeat myself. Where do we go from here?

I confess to a certain degree of frustration over chitchat. I know that it is one of the oils that allow conversations to get going and lubricates the wheels of social intercourse. Yet, by and large, it is pretty meaningless, trivial stuff. 

I find it particularly frustrating when dealing with other Christians.

Do we not have more significant things to share? “How is God working in your life?” “What real struggles (or joys) are you facing?” “What is God teaching you?” “What ministries and missions are you supporting these days and why?” “What did God share with you during your prayer time today?”

There are all kinds of exciting, meaty topics we can discuss, things that matter for all eternity. I don’t suggest for a moment that every conversation must be a deep theological debate filled with the latest and greatest Christianese. 

We don’t have to be stern, stoic, or religious when conversing. Our discussions can still be light but filling, and there can be plenty of laughter.

There are many areas where we can encourage one another, grow together, and bear each other’s burdens. Yet, when you walk into many churches or visit with many Christians, it takes a Herculean effort to get past anything completely superficial.

The Apostle Paul had some strong words for the infant-like nature of the church in Corinth.

But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, or you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

We may not quarrel when we stick to small talk, but we certainly act worldly. The world has nothing more profound to offer. We need to stretch and grow up a bit.

There are indeed places for quick, superficial conversations. It is true that it is not wise to bear the innermost secrets of our hearts in an indiscriminate matter. Yet, there is so much more that we can share with others. 

We serve an awesome God who is hard at work in our lives and the lives of others. Let us learn to talk about that.

The news article showed a building that is  dangerously close to collapsing entirely. Indeed, it wasn’t safe to enter. The cause? A poor foundation.

We often talk about the need for good foundations in faith and life, but it is surprising how seldom we take the time to build them.

Relationships are often built on lies. There are the lies the world tells us about what good relationships are. There are the lies that come from our own experience. We build on lies about our expectations of a relationship. We lie about who we are and who we want our partners to be. It is no wonder that so many relationships crumble or, like this old building, are in danger of falling.

Non-Christians plan their eternity on a wide variety of things. They wish and hope that, somehow, God will let them skate through their sin. They hope that all roads lead to God. On judgment day, Christ’s words will ring damningly in their ears.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

Even those of us who know Him and have our salvation assured do not build on solid foundations. We live our lives based on half-truths, other’s opinions and wishful thinking. We seldom take the time to go to God’s Word, chew on it, and truly digest its contents. We are often foolish builders.

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27

Poor theology and doctrine won’t keep you out of heaven if your faith is truly in Christ.  However, it will distort your view of who God is and what your relationship with Him and others ought to be. It will rob you of joy and blessings. 

What condition is your spiritual house in? Is it firmly anchored in the truth of God’s Word, like the wise man building on the rock? Is it sinking into quicksand? Is it leaning dangerously like that old porch?

It is not too late to do some repair work. Get into the Word and learn what it has to say. Then, apply that knowledge to shore up the weak spots.

I sat on the bench at the popular watching area. A single cormorant sat on the shore, wings spread, sunning itself. Alone, Mallard Drake honked, getting no response. A lone swan flew considerably behind the flock, calling plaintively to its flock mates who were now almost out of sight.

The swan’s call was different from what I was used to hearing. I later looked it up on my Merlin app and learned it was a tundra swan. Although I knew there were plenty of trumpeters around, I didn’t realize there was a separate species.

To the cormorant, the swan, and the duck, the lake seemed a lonely place. It was quite a different story on the pathways.

It seemed that everyone and their dog (literally) were out walking. The park has several walking trails and is busy from when the gates open in the morning until they close in the evening. Depending on your perspective, the lake was both a lonely place and filled with activity.

Life can be that way. We sometimes feel alone and separated from God. Yet, if we could roll back the veil and see what is transpiring in the spirit realm, the level of activity would overwhelm us.

The prophets of old had the heavenlies revealed to them. One verse always strikes me with what it unveils.

Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:17

Some of the disciples saw Jesus and others on the Mount of Transfiguration. Paul, John, and others had the heavens revealed to them.

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we are repeatedly given glimpses of what is happening all around us but just out of our sight. God’s ministering servants are hard at work on our behalf and bringing Him glory.

We are reminded that God is with us.

So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me? Hebrews 13:6

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6

Until next time, remember when you feel alone and distant from God, that there is more than you can imagine happening on your behalf all around you.

We have two grand cats, which means the family  has two cats that sometimes visit us. They are most likely to visit when we look after our granddaughters, particularly if the girls have friends over.

Leeloo (the female) and Vader (the male) are siblings who have been together from birth. Like human siblings, they can be best friends or want nothing to do with one another.

Yesterday afternoon, they wandered down for a visit. Leeloo hopped onto a blanket on the couch, where she sometimes sits beside Kathy. It’s also one of Vader’s favorite spots. He was not impressed that his sister beat him to it.

She chased him away with a few nasty ears-back looks, and a couple of bats on the head with her paw. He gave up for the moment and spent the next couple of hours trying to convince her to go somewhere else. After a while, it became apparent that she no longer wanted the spot but also didn’t want him to have it.

Eventually, he forced his way up, and they reluctantly shared it, with neither particularly happy about it. They drifted off to sleep, each trying to nudge the other off the blanket.

Now, you’d think that as human adults, we’d be more mature than a couple of house cats. Apparently not.

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passionsare at war within you?You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:1-4

The lusts of our eyes and hearts lead us to quarrels and divisions. At times, we want things just because someone else has them. We can be jealous, petty, and greedy. Even as believers, we can fall into this trap.

Fortunately, James reminds us that the Lord offers a way out.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. Luke 4:6-10

As we grow to be more like our Lord, may we be less prone to pettiness and jealousy and have less desire for the things of this world.

May we learn to be more mature and gracious than a couple of house cats.

One of my favorite breakfasts is a cup of coffee and a slice of pizza. The pizza must be leftover from the night before and eaten cold from the refrigerator, and the coffee must be fresh and hot. 

Pizza is one of those foods that is good the night before and great cold the following day. It’s probably not the healthiest breakfast in the world, but what can I say?

There are scientific reasons some foods are better the next day. One source says, “The breakdown of complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars can intensify sweetness, while proteins and fats break down into savory amino acids and fatty acids, enriching umami flavors. Cooling and reheating also play a role, as they can alter the texture of the food, making it more tender and palatable.”

Some of you think my breakfast choice is “gross,” while others think it sounds like a good breakfast. You see, God doesn’t create us all alike. Each one of us is an individual, and while we might have similar likes and dislikes or similar backgrounds, no two of us are exactly alike.

It’s like snowflakes or fingerprints. Out of all the billions of people who have been born or all the innumerable who will come, no one is exactly like you or me.

God’s fine hand of craftsmanship created each of us for a different purpose. He’s given all of us a special purpose in life, a unique ministry, a contribution to be made for all eternity. None of us are here by accident. None of us is without a divine purpose.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

Think about what a blessing that is. God made YOU unique because He has something that only YOU can do in mind. That means every person, young or old, rich or poor, Christian or non, has value beyond measure.

It’s ironic that we go to great lengths and travel vast distances to see the world’s treasures and wonders when the real treasures are all around us. 

The person you love is a treasure in God’s eyes. The person at work who makes you crazy has value beyond measure. The street person, the criminal, the person who you disdain because of their lifestyle or skin color, all are valuable in God’s eyes. 

When you look down on or mistreat them, you look down and mistreat the wonders of God.

Until next time, I pray God gives you the eyes to see how unique and wonderful you are and how valuable ALL the people around you are in His sight (even those who like coffee and old pizza for breakfast).

A familiar passage in the gospels warns of the  dangers of self-righteousness.

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 18:9-14

Hopefully, most believers understand that our salvation is solely based on the completed work of Christ by grace and faith. Yet self-righteousness is a trap we can all easily fall into.

We do it when we want to deny the effects of our own sin, thinking, “Well, yes, I do that, but at least I’m not as bad as someone else.”

The battle against self is the greatest one we will ever face. Self is the source of all sin. Adam and Eve wanted to be like God. 

Jesus’ brother, James, puts it this way.

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when lured and enticed by his desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. James 1:13-15

Our sinful nature is selfish. This is compounded by the fact that we live in a fallen world that encourages us to be self-centered and follow our sin-filled hearts. Giving into temptation is glorified as a victory and our right. That thinking is straight from the pit of hell and smells like smoke.

To battle self, let us fix our eyes upon Jesus. The Holy Spirit strengthens us, and the Word encourages and directs us.

Lord Jesus, teach us to understand who we are in you and to live accordingly. Help us set aside our old, self-reliant ways and guard us from sin.

One of the fantastic things about living in the Fraser  Valley and so close to the coast is the mists. They come and go, never the same from moment to moment or day to day.

They can conceal part of the landscape, only to open up or move on, leaving it again. Late Saturday morning, I snapped today’s image with my phone.

A layer of foggy mist covers most of the hill. The cell phone tower reminds me of a castle turret atop an island floating in the clouds, with nearby treetops appearing like more little islands.

A few moments later, it was all concealed from my view. Several minutes passed, and the entirety of the hill was visible again. It was as if the clouds were causing the scenery to play peek-a-boo with us.

Our lives have a lot in common with the mist. Our life may seem long in comparison to the entirety of time. It’s just a little blip on the radar. Our sixty, seventy, eighty, or more years color and shape things briefly, and then we’re gone, and things change.

It is by relatively few for a short season if we are remembered at all when we’re gone. People go to great lengths to ensure their legacies, endowing schools and libraries, buying stadiums, and more. Sooner or later, someone replaces them, and even that legacy disappears into the mist of time.

Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. Psalm 144:4

For we are but of yesterday and know nothing, for our days on earth are a shadow. Job 8:9

For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding. 1 Chronicles 29:15

I’m not writing to depress you about the shortness of life. Instead, I want to remind you what a precious gift each and every moment is.

Every breath we take is a gift from God. For believers, it is an opportunity to magnify the Lord and prepare for the blissful eternity of glory. For non-believers, this life is the closest they will ever come to paradise. Unless they turn to Christ before their passing, their eternity will make the worst days of their lives seem wonderful.

Cherish each moment. It truly is a gift for the believer. Even our hard times strengthen and shape us to be more like Jesus. A faith that has not been tested is only a wish.

I don’t know the specifics of what your day will bring. You might be on the mountaintop of joy and wonder, deep in the valley of pain and the shadow of death, or most likely somewhere in between.

If you know Jesus, rejoice because He will use your circumstances for good. If you don’t yet know Him, take the time today to surrender and be reconciled to God.

Whatever the day brings, know that God loves you and desires you to spend forever in Paradise with Him.

Kathy and I have decided to add something new to  our Bible reading plans. We do those separately as we are using different plans and translations. I found a “Reading Through The Church Fathers” in a year plan.

That plan takes us through a curated introduction to the early church fathers over the course of the year. It’s made available by C. Michael Patton at Credo House Ministries.  The texts for the day are provided along with a narrated version of the text. We watch and listen together, stopping to discuss.

As Protestants, we often pay little heed to the church fathers. That is to our detriment. Like any commentator or preacher, the “fathers” can be in error in places but provide a wealth of insight into the faith and the Scriptures.

Most of these fathers lived before the Roman Catholic/Protestant separation, the Orthodox schism, and other divisions. They are a part of our shared Christian history and are enriching to read.

With that unsolicited plug set aside, let’s move into today’s Gleanings.

I recently read the Psalms, and the latter part of Psalm 65 particularly struck me.

You visit the earth and water it;
you greatly enrich it;
the river of God is full of water;
you provide their grain,
for so you have prepared it.

You water its furrows abundantly,
settling its ridges,
softening it with showers,
and blessing its growth.

You crown the year with your bounty;
your wagon tracks overflow with abundance.

The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
the hills gird themselves with joy,

the meadows clothe themselves with flocks,
the valleys deck themselves with grain,
they shout and sing together for joy. 

Psalm 65:9-13

God, the creator of all things, lavishes great attention on His Creation. He cares for it and tends to it. He is not an absentee landlord who allows things to happen to His creation.

God appointed his children to be the stewards of this little planet we call home.

God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:28

That verse has often been used to justify the wanton, wholesale rape of our home, its resources, and the exploitation of people. Yet, when we compare it to the Psalmist’s description of God’s tender care, we see how wrong such a view is.

We are called to be faithful stewards of all God has provided. Yes, the land, the sea, and the sky are provided for us to use. We do not have the right to abuse them, however. The abuses we pour out on God’s creation not only have the potential for harm to the generations to come but are an affront to God.

I am not advocating that we all become tree-huggers. While the environmental movement has many valuable elements, it also contains much pseudoscience and earth worship. I am advocating that we take a little more care of the earthly home God has provided us.

Perhaps the little bit one person does won’t make a difference, but if each of the 7 billion people on this little blue ball, third from the sun, does a bit, the effect will be tremendous.
