Issue 1794 – Feathers – August 21, 2025

Canadian’s love their donuts. I read recently that we have more donut shops per capita than any place in the world. They are a key component of Canadian social life in the way that pubs are in Britain.
I walked into the donut shop, where four police officers were sitting at a table. They were big guys, an intimidating-looking crew, even though they were laughing and seemed very friendly.
The intimidation came from the size of their side arms and their bullet-resistant Kevlar vests. It wasn’t all that many years ago that the only police officers who had Kevlar vests were the SWAT guys and other tactical units, and they only wore them when responding to a call. Now every officer wears one all the time.
It’s a sad comment on our society, but I understand the need for them to carry large-capacity sidearms and to wear protective vests. They have a dangerous job, and their gear is an investment in their safety and our protection.
We all invest in something to keep us safe. We buy insurance. We purchase homes. Some people buy alarm systems, guns, dogs, and more.
I’m all for keeping safe, ultimately though my safety is in feathers.
Yes, you read that right … feathers!
How in the world can there be safety in feathers? Feathers can’t protect anyone. In a vest or a winter coat, they can keep out the winter cold. In a duvet, they can keep a bed warm, but protect a person? No way.
Okay, I confess, not physical feathers, but feathers nonetheless.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Psalm 91:2-4
We find safety under the mighty wings of our Lord.
Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, Psalm 17:8
How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 36:7
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. Psalm 57:1
Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Psalm 61:4
…for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. Psalm 63:7-8
I’m all for Kevlar vests and handguns. Alarms and insurance can be wise investments. Ultimately, though, I’ll trust in the “feathers” of God.
Until next time, may you find rest in the shadow of His comforting wings.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed,
Kevin
