Issue 875 – So Close – October 7, 2022

Yesterday, Kathy and I took a walk around Willband Park, Abbotsford. It was unseasonably warm in the middle of the day, so the bird watching was slow except for a few geese, ducks and grebes. We saw no sign of the muskrats or beavers, although we saw a lot of skunk scat.
I did see this large Great Blue Heron tucked into a corner, almost invisible from all angles. After a couple of shots, we passed, and I tried to move in for a closer picture. The second image is the result.

It was not having anything to do with me getting closer.
Many of the things we desire in life are like that. We tell ourselves that we will be content with a better job, more money, the newest whiz-bang gadget, a spouse and many other things. When we finally attain that goal, we find the contentment has moved on, just like my heron. We can get close to the goal but never quite reach it.
The things of this world are never going to satisfy us fully.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north, around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again. All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after. Ecclesiastes 1:1-11
Advertisers know of this weakness in our fallen nature. Businesses spend billions of dollars each year to keep us buying things that promise to deliver happiness or success and fail to do so.
Why do we keep falling for their empty promises? We fall for them because we haven’t found the contentment that comes only in Christ or forgotten the source of our real joy.
Only the Lord can satisfy. We were designed and created to be in intimate holy fellowship with the King of Kings. Nothing else can fill that need.
My friends, focus your eyes on the Lord and find your fulfillment there. He will never disappoint.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
