Issue 983 – Deception Pass – February 15, 2023
On our Monday driving tour, we crossed over Deception Pass. The bridge(s) more than 650 feet above the water makes for an impressive view.
Even at that height, we could see giant whirlpools and roiling waters. The view is apparently even more spectacular at tide changes as the waters from the two straits collide.
Deception Pass Bridge (actually two bridges) connects Whidbey and Fidalgo Islands via a brief intermission on Canoe Island. The pass connects Skagit Bay (part of Puget Sound) with the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
It was named by Captain Vancouver as the passageway initially eluded his team’s exploration, and he concluded that Whidbey Island was a peninsula. With investigation, the sailors found and mapped Deception Pass on June 7, 1792.
In this case, no actual harm was done by the supposed deception. Unfortunately, deception can cause significant problems.
The first recorded deception in the Scriptures was when Satan deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:1-7). He has been at it ever since. It’s no wonder that the Scriptures call Him the father of lies (John 8:24).
The biggest lies the enemy tells us are that there is no god, that if there is a god, his rules don’t apply to us, or that we can be gods ourselves. These deceptions come in many forms; all purposed to separate us from the truth.
On the other hand, God is truth.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. John 17:17
Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. Psalm 119:42
The antidote to the lies and deception of the enemy is the truth of Christ.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
There is power and freedom in the truth. The enemy can do his worst to hide the truth, but light overcomes darkness. Why do some stay in the dark if that statement is true? They prefer the darkness to the light.
Some might see that as a judgmental statement, but it is a biblical truth. Many will reject Jesus because they prefer the darkness. They choose dark over light, and eternal torment over glory.
This is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God. John 3:19-21
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:18-21
We can walk in darkness or the light. Choose light.
For those walking in the light, our task is to proclaim the truth so that some may be saved from the deceiver.
Be Blessed
