Issue 1162 – Lonesome Whistle – May 26, 2023

We used to live a few miles from a busy transcontinental rail line. Every now and then, across the stillness of the night would come the cry of a lonesome mournful whistle as the train passed by certain intersections. That lonesome whistle has been the basis for many country songs.
The train would sound its call, and you would never hear a response. The intersections were typically empty, and the train seemed to cry out with no one to hear. Night after night, it would blow its mournful call and hear silence in its wake.
I don’t hear that whistle anymore, but if I am lying in bed awake in the wee hours of the morning, I remember it.
Sometimes in life, we feel like that train. We lie in our beds and agonize over our lives. We relive past mistakes, struggle with the day’s problems, worry about tomorrow, and sometimes acknowledge our loneliness or brokenness. We cry out, but no one hears.
At least, that is how it can feel. The train doesn’t whistle alone; I’ve heard it, and so have many others. Even when you don’t hear a response to your cries, God has heard them.
All of us go through times when we wonder if anyone is listening and if anyone cares at all. We feel as if we are the only one left who cares. Elijah thought He was the last faithful man standing. King David frequently went through tough times, crying out at night and wondering where God was.
I am weary with my moaning; every night, I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes. Psalm 6:6-7
That is the lonely cry of midnight sorrow. Yet David understood something we forget at times, the Lord hears.
Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer. Psalm 6:8-9
Even when we don’t hear an immediate response, God has heard us. God hears and knows us in the darkest moments, the times of most painful trials and the midst of our despair.
The Scriptures repeatedly teach us that,
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
God has said in many places, “Never will I leave or forsake you.”
Be comforted, my friends, even in those wee dark hours with the lonesome whistle blowing, God hear. He knows, and He cares. Hold fast. The morning is coming.
Be Blessed
