Issue 1179 – Headlines – June 17, 2023
The world is a messy place. Listen to the stories of the people around you or spend five minutes with the news.
Here are a few random headlines from this morning.
15 Dead in Manitoba Crash
Losing hope of finding kids in a plane crash – Bolivia
108 Dead in a boating accident – Nigeria
Theft of brains, organs and skin from the morgue – U.S.
Rescuers harassed by snipers – Ukraine
1 in 5 single adults live in poverty – Canada
Doctors advise people over sixty to remain indoors due to record heat – India
Tornadoes – Texas and Florida
Cyclone – Pakistan
Thousands displaced in wildfires – Canada
6.2 Earthquake – Philipines
That doesn’t begin to take into account the epidemics of crime and substance abuse. It says nothing of those struggling with addictions, inflation, homelessness and mental health issues. Marital and other relational problems are old news. The hopelessness of many young people doesn’t warrant a mention in the daily news.
It seems like evil is winning, and God is on the run. Yet, nothing could be further from the truth. God has the victory. I like to say, “We win. I’ve read the book, ” but there was no doubt. God is, was and always will be sovereign.
The day of reckoning will come, and all will be set straight.
In the interim, we trust Him.
Yesterday I was reading in the Psalms. I meditated on Psalm 37. At 40 verses, it is too long to show in its entirety but short enough for a quick read, so if you have a moment, take the time to do so.
Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
and your justice as the noonday.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices! Psalm 37:1-7
There is a lovely little formula in those first seven verses.
Fret not. Trust in the Lord. Delight yourself in the Lord. Commit. Be still. Wait patiently.
Let’s skip down to the last few verses of the Psalm.
Mark the blameless and behold the upright,
for there is a future for the man of peace.
But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
the future of the wicked shall be cut off.
The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
The Lord helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him. Psalm 37:37-40
There truly is victory in Jesus. No matter what the world throws at us or how horrific the headlines, God has it all under control.
Jesus spoke to his followers about what they were to face and said,
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
We will have eternal peace in the life to come. In the interim, we can have the peace that transcends all understanding. We have the Spirit, and we can rejoice in all circumstances.
I don’t know what you face today or what circumstances surround you. I do know that God is bigger than any of them, and victory is assured.
Hold fast, my dear friends. Hold fast.
Be Blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
Kevin
