Issue 1362 – Eyes to See – February 5, 2024

Saturday, Kathy and I ventured out to one of my favourite parks, Campbell Valley Regional Park. It’s a pretty spot, and there are always many birds and small critters to see.
In addition to the usual ducks, chickadees, Stellar’s jay, towhees and more, we were blessed on Saturday to see a pair of golden-crowned sparrows. They are greyish brown underneath and streaked brown on the back. Their heads have a black crown and a bright yellow forehead. This morning’s issue shows a stock photo of one of these cute little birds.
They are not an uncommon bird, but we hadn’t seen them at this park before,
A tiny flash of yellow some distance in the undergrowth caught our eye. We stopped to watch a pair of them gambolling about.
We could see a tiny rivulet of water in the undergrowth coming down the hillside. I couldn’t tell if it was a seasonal stream or perhaps it came from a small spring up on the hillside. Several obstructions made small pools, just large enough for the sparrows to bathe in.
We watched the sparrows take a drink and the splash about bathing themselves. It was a delightful scene. It was close enough to see well but too far for a clear photo with my phone.
Numerous people passed us on the path, often stopping very close to us to watch various birds and squirrels nearer the path and missed the show we were privileged to see. I often wonder how many similar things we walk past without noticing.
Our faith walk can be like that at times. We are either not paying attention and miss seeing God at work or looking in the wrong place.
Our Lord sometimes works in ways that are so obvious they can’t be missed. He parted the Red Sea, raised the dead, turned water into wine, and fed 5000 men (plus women and children) from a few fishes and some bread. At other times, it is far more subtle, and we might miss out.
Our Lord is always working; we need to have eyes to see. We must share with other believers when God has answered prayer or seen his hand clearly at work in someone’s life.
There is great encouragement and joy when we see Him transforming lives. He saves sinners, restores relationships, brings people to freedom, and answers uncountable prayers, large and small.
I love the words of the Psalmist,
Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live and keep your word.
Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm 119:17-18
My prayer for you this morning is simple: Lord, give them eyes to see your hand at work.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
