Issue 1414 – In the Beginning (2) – April 5, 2024
A couple of days ago, I was in Genesis and wrote a Gleanings in the first few words of Genesis.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1
I was reading that passage again yesterday, and several things struck me about the God revealed in it and in the words that follow.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening, and there was morning, the first day. And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” Genesis 1:1-6
We know God was there before there was anything and that He is incredibly powerful because He created everything in the material and spiritual world that was not.
Looking at the list of verbs in this short passage alone, we see he is an active God.
God created.
The Spirit of God hovered.
God said.
God saw.
God separated.
God called.
He called.
God said.
If you read the balance of Genesis 1 and the verse three verses of Genesis 2, you will find more than 40 verbs describing what God did in the creation.
Someone once asked me what the Bible was about. I had to answer that it is about God. He is the reason there is anything. He is the hope for His creation. He is the culmination of all things.
Yes, people are included in the Bible narrative because it is written to people to help them find God and be reconciled with Him.
The Bible reveals God to us. It is a revelatory document, a road map to finding eternal peace and reconciliation.
It records people’s actions, their high points, and their lows. It details the history of humankind, the tribe of Israel, the incarnation, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and the history of the early church. None of this is recorded without God.
When we read Scripture, we ought to look for God’s handiwork. We should seek to understand how His Spirit moves and the coming, incarnation, and anticipated return of Jesus.
Yes, we find a book that tells us how we ought to live and relate to others, yet the book isn’t primarily about us.
May your mind be tuned to the things of God as you read the book about God. May you draw ever closer to Him.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God

Gleanings From The Word
Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary life.
Soli Deo Gloria (For the glory of God alone)
Never let the enemy tell you that you are worthless or insignificant. Your value in God’s eyes is so great that it was worth dying for. You are a blessing to the world. You are so precious to God that his plan for heaven will not be complete without you.
