Issue 1458 – Disappointment – May 27, 2024
After running some errands on Saturday, Kathy and I decided to head out for a drive. About 100 km away, a small cafe was getting some great reviews on the food, especially their pies and portion sizes. It wasn’t supposed to be a fancy place, more of a trucker cafe alongside the highway. It sounded like an ideal destination for a short road trip.
We found the cafe without a problem and headed in. The place was busy, and the servers were very disorganized. It was run down with big tears in the booth’s vinyl seats. If we had been paying attention, we would have noticed that despite being a truck stop, there wasn’t a big rig in the lot. That should have been a clue as to what to expect.
The service was slow, and the coffee was barely drinkable. The best thing I can say about the pies is that they were edible. It wasn’t enjoyable, and we won’t go there again. (The pie in the photo was not from our visit.)
The drive to and from the cafe was pleasant, so despite the poor food experience, the trip wasn’t a waste.
Now, a disappointing restaurant experience isn’t the end of the world. It’s a first-world problem, to be sure. Life comes with disappointments of many forms, both large and small.
Sometimes, we can get disappointed in God. There are times when He answers our prayers differently than we wanted. Sometimes, other Christians disappoint us, and we get angry at God. There can be occasions when our sin interferes with our relationship with God, and we blame Him.
The simple truth is that being a Christian doesn’t mean you always get what you want when you want it. God isn’t a personal genie at our beck and call.
He is the sovereign ruler of the universe and not answerable to us. He loves us and has redeemed us, but we are still works in process. There are many steps along the way in our sanctification.
We must learn to trust that God always does the right thing at the right time, even if it isn’t what or when we want it.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
…And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28-29
We must remember that His ways are not ours. If God did things the way I wanted, He wouldn’t be much of a God.
When we are disappointed in God, let’s examine our hearts. God will be vindicated in the end, and He will more than surpass what we genuinely need.
