Issue 867 – Ripples – September 29, 2022

“Hens and chicks” is the common name for a family of easy-to-grow succulents. The plant features fleshy pointed leaves in a rosette pattern. The “mother” rosette is the hen, and the little rosettes that grow off the hen are the “chicks.”
Succulents are plants that store water in enlarged, fleshy and thickened leaves. The word succulent comes from the Latin sucus, meaning “juice” or “sap.” Succulents such as hens and chicks, aloes, living stones and more tend to do well in arid climates or soil conditions. A colony of hens and chicks can quickly cover a two-square-foot area of poor soil.
Hen and chicks come in various colours and leaf sizes, making them an ideal low-growing display plant for dry areas with poor soil. They are also popular as houseplants because of their ease of care.
I find the rosettes remind me of ripples on a pond. They start small and grow ever outward in greater diameter.
While in our community group today, we look at a familiar Psalm with a pattern much like a ripple.
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul, the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. Psalm 19:7-9
The psalm speaks of the goodness of the Lord’s Word. Buried within the description is a subtext that parallels the life of a believer.
The Word is “perfect, reviving the soul.” It is under the proclamation of the gospel that people are born again.
The Word is “sure, making wise the simple.” The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The more we know of God, the more our fear of His holy wrath and power. As believers, we are saved from His wrath, but we are more cognizant of it.
God’s Word is “pure, enlightening the eyes.” The more time we spend with Him and His Word, the more we see things through His eyes and desire to be like Him.
His truth is “clean, enduring forever.” Believers have him for all this life and forever in the next life.
His Word is “true, and righteous altogether.” Believers are covered in the righteousness of Christ and will be fully righteous in glory.
This psalm casts a beautiful image of God’s inerrant, holy Word and the believer in Christ.
Praise God for the gift of the scriptures.
