Issue 741 – Mary Had a Little Lamb – May 11, 2022

As I walked down the street, I came across half a dozen girls busy playing on the sidewalk. A fresh hopscotch and some completed tic tac toe games were done with some sidewalk chalk. At the moment I passed by, the girls were busy jumping rope.
Two girls turned the rope, and the rest of the girls took turns jumping in and out. Instead of the usual jump rope songs I remember from childhood, these girls were making up songs from old nursery rhymes.
I don’t recall the exact words, but one of their songs went something like this, “Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. And wow, that lamb could go.” At “that lamb could go,” the ropes turners moved into “pepper” mode and turned it as quick as their little arms could spin the skipping rope.
They sang a couple of other songs as well, but Mary and her lamb stuck in my head for some reason. As we walked further, my mind kept repeating the verse.
As the song revolved around my brain, I had a revelation. It’s so obvious that I wondered why it had never occurred to me before. Mary did indeed have a little lamb. His name is Jesus.
Jesus is the lamb of God. He’s the pure, spotless lamb that makes our salvation possible.
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29
The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
John 1:35-36 NIV
The pure and spotless lamb came to be slaughtered on our behalf.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
1 Peter 1:14-21
The lamb would grow up to be our shepherd.
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:14-16
The lamb will return as the lion.
… one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” Revelation 5:5
Setting aside the glory due to His name, the Lord Jesus willingly condescended to take on flesh and be born of a virgin girl in the Middle East. The all-powerful one permitted His enemies to mock Him, torture Him and even kill Him, but death could not restrain Him. Jesus rose again, was seen by hundreds, and ascended into heaven, where He intercedes on our behalf. When the timing is right, He will return for his flock.
What a lamb. What a shepherd. What a saviour.
Until next time, rejoice when you hear the old nursery rhyme about Mary and her lamb. Her lamb is our salvation, and that’s something worth celebrating.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
Kevin.
