Issue 813 – Moving Time – August 1, 2022

This morning, we take a brief break from our series on the Seven churches. No, despite the title and the images, we are not moving again.
Yesterday marked the first anniversary of our move to this home in Abbotsford. Here the U-haul and container have arrived at our new home.

In some ways, it seems like it was only yesterday. In others, it feels like something from the dim, dark, distant past.
Time is funny that way; it seems elastic. Summer vacation from school as a child might seem to last forever. The same period for an adult might fly by. I recently referred to an event as “just the other day,” in retrospect, it was many months ago.
I am confident that most people have experienced an event in their lives when time slowed or seemed to do so. I remember an auto accident, the entire event took several seconds at most, but I can recall each detail as if it took hours. Time seemed to slow as we prepared for the impact of the car running the stop sign.
Everything in the created order is subject to time. It has a definitive moment of creation and an ordained moment of demise. For a fly, it might be a few days, while for an ocean, it might be measured in millennia, but everything has time constraints.
Fortunately for us, our Lord is under no such limitations. He is the creator of time and not subject to it and transcends time, space and matter. He can be everywhere at all times.
Everything that exists within the limitations of time changes at some point. The changes may be virtually instantaneous or may take eons, but they happen. Our Lord remains unchanged and unchanging.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
In more figurative language,
“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. Isaiah 43:10
For a god to be created, it must be within time. Since the One True God exists outside of time, no entity can come either before Him or after Him. Therefore any such “gods” are not gods at all.
No influence can corrupt God since He exists outside of all things. His nature is holy and righteous and will always be so.
Being time-bound beings, we must measure things within the lens of time. The Lord has no such restrictions. That is why the Bible can make the following truth claims:
For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. Psalm 90:4
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:8-9
The Lord’s mercies and grace are new every morning from our perspective, but the truth is that they are never-ending. There is neither ebb nor flow to them.
Time will pass for us. Sometimes it will speed by, and others seem to drag, but it marches onward. No matter our time, we can rejoice that our unchanging Lord isn’t subject to time, and we can depend on him regardless of day, date or season.
It matters not if we are nine or ninety, newborn or near death; we can count on God to come through.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed
Kevin.
