Issue 845 – The Sky is Falling – September 5, 2022
Today’s image is of a 1958 first edition copy of the classic children’s tale “Chicken Little.” Many editions by various publishers exist of this story.
You probably know the tale; a frightened chick overreacts to the world around it and cries to anyone who will listen that the sky is falling. It is convinced that the world is due to end at any moment now.
The story came to mind after watching a news program this morning. The various talking heads and pundits were crying out TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it). The sky is falling.
Plaques, wars, civil unrest, racial and other inequalities, poverty, addictions and more were bringing about the end of civilization. To top that off, man-made climate change and the threat of thermo-nuclear war were making it likely that the planet itself might be destroyed. Fear-mongering was the order of the day.
I don’t wish to make light of the world’s plight. Those issues have some merit, and people’s lives are impacted. However, such things are not new. The world has been in a never-ending series of problems since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, bringing sin and death into the world.
The bible describes it this way.
For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Romans 8:23-24
As believers, we must be careful not to give in to fear. Our God is the sovereign creator of all that exists; nothing happens without His knowledge and oversight. He is in total control over everything.
That doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen; after all, the world is a fallen place, and people are sinful by nature and by choice.
It does mean that He will use everything that happens for the good of His people.
“we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
Jesus told us that there would be problems.
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
Knowing the Lord has it all under control doesn’t mean we bury our heads in the sand, or close our eyes, hold hands and sing Kumbaya. We must still be aware of what is happening around us and react to the people of a lost and hurting world with love and compassion.
The darkness and fear surrounding us provide the perfect place for the light of Jesus to shine. We don’t need to fortify ourselves in little Christian silos. Yes, we must gather together regularly for fellowship, encouragement and so on.
The world is hurting and needs Jesus. Will we hide away in fear or boldly walk into the fray in the name of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit?
The command to go is clear; the choice to obey is ours.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed.
