Issue 901 – The Hidey-hole November 4, 2022

The winter season is starting to kick in through much of northern and western Canada. Many communities are having snow, and some are anticipating record snowfalls.
Here in our little protected area of the West coast, snow isn’t typically a problem. The small amounts we get are usually melted off in a day or two at most.
Winter can be a challenging time for many, a season they dread. Some will suffer the effects of SAD (Seasonal affective disorder) and endure depression. Others will find the physical and mental strain of dealing with snow and cold hard to bear. We can quickly fall into a mindset that winter came too early and will likely stay far too late.
Green things will be buried under snow, and many outside activities will be curtailed.
It can feel like Spring will never arrive. Some people are already commenting on that, even though the weather has just begun to arrive and doesn’t officially get here for more than a month.
I took today’s photo a couple of years ago on a warmer late winter day. The snow had begun to melt some. Underneath the snow, tucked into a little hidey-hole in the rocks behind the trickling of a small spring, life continued; the grass even stayed green. Finding the hidey-hole was a delightful little surprise when everything around it was still snowbound.
It was an encouraging reminder that life doesn’t stop simply because it is winter. Things may go dormant for a season, but when Spring returns, life goes on and continues to flourish.
We sometimes treat winter like death. Although it is a natural part of life, we want to do everything we can to avoid it.
Life is precious. Every person’s life has intrinsic value because we are all created in the image of God. He knew us and planned us long before we were ever conceived. We should do what we can to reasonably prolong life, but Christians have no reason to fear death.
Like winter, death is transitional. Believers are born again by faith, and after the curtain of death closes behind us, we will find ourselves in the presence of our Lord forever and be stripped of all the baggage associated with sin.
Believers will still die physically. It happens to us all at some point. Death is never random; all of us have a God appointed number of days.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalm 139:16
In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:10
Since his days are determined, and the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass Job 14:5
We needn’t waste our lives fearing death. What follows death for believers is a blessing. Instead of fearing the end, we ought to live each day entirely to the glory of God.
Each of us may be like the little hidey-hole and there to give hope and joy to others.
We have today, but none of us is guaranteed tomorrow. How will you choose to spend it?
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
