Issue 1297 – The Standard – November 14, 2023

I have recently been editing a book I wrote in the early 2000s on the Old Testament names of God. It was offered briefly to early readers of Gleanings From the Word. Perhaps the edited and updated version may become available again sometime in the New Year.
I have recently been editing a book I wrote in the early 2000s on the Old Testament names of God. It was offered briefly to early readers of Gleanings From the Word. Perhaps the edited and updated version may become available again sometime in the New Year.
Many of the names of God in the Old Testament are compound words with Jehovah (or YHVH) as the root. For example, there are YHVH-Yireh (or Jehovah—Jireh), the Lord who provides, YHVH-Shalom (the Lord in my peace) and many more.
This morning, we will take a quick peek at Jehovah-Nissi.
Jehovah-Nissi is not our Lord is a foreign car (okay, I know it is a groaner, but I could not resist). Jehovah-Nissi is the Lord Our Banner or the Lord Our Standard. It was the name Moses gave to the altar he erected after defeating the Amalekites and appears only once in Scripture.
This was no ordinary battle. It was won in the supernatural. The Israelites were winning as long as Moses held his hands up in praise to God. When he dropped his hands, the Amalekites would get the upper hand. Finally, Aaron and Hur stood by Moses and helped him keep His hands raised long enough for the tribes of Israel to gain final victory (See Exodus 17).
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, saying, “A hand upon the throne of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” Exodus 17:14-16
Let’s just rephrase that a bit to show the names of God.
Then YHVH said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” And Moses built an altar and called the name of it YHVH-Nissi, saying, “A hand upon the throne of YHVH! YHVH will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” Exodus 17:14-16
In times of old, a banner or standard identified a group you were affiliated with. We see similar concepts today with national flags or even the proliferation of sport’s team’s uniforms and colours when the local team is in the finals.
If you are a movie buff, think Mel Gibson in the Patriot. The flag, the banner or the standard was a rally point. It was of enormous spiritual and emotional significance.
Think of the Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima during the Second World War. ( Trivia point – the image was actually the second raising. The cameraman was not present when the first Marines raised it, so he had it reenacted. Still, it was a powerful image). The image of those troops raising the flag still inspires patriotic feelings.
How much more will the power of standing under the banner of the Great I Am be?
We see Christ prophesied as the standard in the words of Isaiah the Prophet.
This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I will beckon to the Gentiles, I will lift up my banner to the peoples; they will bring your sons in their arms and carry your daughters on their shoulders. Isaiah 49:22 NIV
While He did not call Himself by the name Jehovah-Nissi, we can think of Christ as our banner. He was raised up on a cross, as was the brazen snake in the desert with Moses.
When He was raised up, all men could be drawn to Him. He is our rallying point, victory, and inspiring hope for eternity.
There is power in the name of the Lord. Praise His holy name.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
