Issue #675 – Signs of Spring – March 6, 2022
A sunny corner in our backyard is beginning to show sure signs of spring. The birds are beginning to nest up, and mating dances are not uncommon. All in all, things are seasonally unfolding as expected.
God created the sun, moon and stars, at least in part to help us mark time.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:14-18
God created time and seasons for our benefit. A finite marking for finite minds. We cannot comprehend the reality of timelessness anymore than we understand infinity and eternity. Those things are the realm of the Father, Son and Spirit.
Time impacts all created beings, but not our creator. Time requires matter, space and change. The Lord created both matter and space, and He does not change. He is spirit, so He is not made of matter and does not take up space.
While God can intervene in time from the outside, time does not impact Him. He was before time, exists outside of its confines and will still be there when time is no more.
That is a strange concept for those of us who have experienced time and known nothing but. It is challenging to get our heads around, but it is a profound truth.
The Bible is abundantly clear that people are created in the image of God. It is also clear that we are not gods now, nor will we ever be gods. That sets the Christian faith apart from many religions (including some pseudo-Christian faiths such as the Church of Latter-Day Saints), which teach that humans can become gods.
We can become fully righteous and have eternal life. We are adopted into the family of God and joint-heirs with God. We will become all that God has intended us to be. Despite all of that being true, we will never be gods.
The concept that we can become gods of any sort flies in the face of what God has revealed of Himself.
Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
Isaiah 45:22
I have no desire to be God but rejoice that He includes me in His family forever.
I can count on the coming of spring with joy. I can also rejoice that we serve a God beyond what I can fully comprehend; a God who loves us enough to condescend to enter time and space to save us. We cannot understand Him fully, but He has revealed what we need to know through His Word and creation.
