Issue 815 – Climate Change – August 3, 2022

The heat wave is taking a break for a few days at least, and there might be some small amount of rain in the offering—a much-needed relief.
Summer seemed to be about a month late in arriving this year. I hope it will last as long as usual and stay for the month-long period we missed.
The world is in a tizzy over climate change. Is man-made climate change a real thing? Is it just the expected changes in weather patterns that we have seen over the years? Is it because the earth has shifted on its axis over the past 50 years (also something that happens periodically)? Most people have a strong opinion on the issue, which has become very contentious.
Whatever your position, the issue has certainly become a political football and a money-making opportunity for many.
Indeed as Christians, we are called to be good stewards of all the Lord has created us. That behooves us (I love the word behooves – it is archaic but sounds great) to do whatever is within our power to look after this planet to the best of our ability.
Does the Bible have anything to say about global climate change?
The Bible doesn’t specifically address the topic. We know that the earth (along with the rest of the created order) will pass away.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 2 Peter 3:10
The Scriptures are silent on the changes to the climate by and large. However, we do know that God is sovereign over His creation. Therefore, we know He is permitting what is happening for His own purposes.
We also know that as believers, we are to love people and be peacemakers. That means that wherever we fall on the issue, we must learn to extend love and grace to those with differing perspectives.
In the interim, between the time the weather changes today and the Lord comes in the final judgement, we find a clue as to how we ought to react in 2 Peter.
Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. 2 Peter 3:11-18
The climate may change, but God’s faithfulness never does. We can trust in His promises and be at peace.
If the Lord returns today, may we all be found to be faithful and at peace.
Hallelu Yah (Praise God)
Be blessed
