Issue 1316 – Wonder Vocabulary – December 8, 2023
I remember a time, some years ago when I was sitting on a rock overlooking the mountain lake. The sun shone on my face, and I closed my eyes, listening to a worship CD on my no-name personal stereo system.
It felt so good to just sit there and hear songs of praise. As I sat listening, storm clouds formed on nearby mountains. The sky was filled with the rolling echo of thunderclaps every now and then. Sometimes, the thunder seemed to go on almost forever. Despite the thunder, the sun still shone where I was sitting.
It felt as if God was displaying his glory for me. The sun’s warmth as I listened to words of praise showed His loving and intimate side. The rolling thunder that filled the mountains reminded me of His incredible power.
In many ways, He is too much for us to ever comprehend. I try to come up with the words that express my wonder at who He is and what He has done, and I fail. Awesome? Overused. Incredible? Not nearly big enough. Wonderful? Powerful? Magnificent? He’s more than that.
Stupendous? Marvellous? Astonishing? Mind-blowing? Phenomenal? How about smashing or staggering or tremendous? The Lord is certainly all those things, but they fail to capture His essence.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? Fun word, but not enough reverence.
The Bible writers had the same problem. There are so many names and expressions used to describe God, His character, and attributes that a person could spend a lifetime studying them all and still not fully understand.
For today, I think I’ll just have to settle for God. He is God. It is a simple word, but somehow, it contains all the wonder and magnificence that we comprehend. To be God is to be the supreme creator of everything and sovereign ruler of all.
It felt as if God was displaying his glory for me. The sun’s warmth as I listened to words of praise showed His loving and intimate side. The rolling thunder that filled the mountains reminded me of His incredible power.
He’s wonderful; he’s God now when we can’t even begin to see all of His glory. What words will we use when we see Him face to face?
When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:11-12
It’s no wonder we’ll spend eternity with Him, it will take that long to come up with words to describe His love and power. It will take an eternity to express my gratitude that He knows me and cares.
Until next time, may words of praise and wonder fill your lips.
Be blessed
Hallelu Yah / Praise God
