Issue 1359 – Newborns – February 1, 2024
A photo of some goslings popped up on my computer this morning. The image took me back some years.
Genni, the wonder dog, and I took our evening stroll around the lake. A pair of geese was taking their seven tiny, yellow goslings for a swim. The goslings were tiny and couldn’t have been more than a few days old.
It was surprising because it was early to see goslings. I wasn’t expecting to see any for at least another week or two.
They’ll grow quickly. From newborns to fully grown geese by fall. That’s the way they are designed to be. Some won’t make it to adulthood, and some won’t survive to return for the spring, but that is the way things are meant to be.
God designed everything with a season and all life with just the right life span. Sometimes life is shorter than we might have expected, but He always knows what’s best even when we don’t understand it, but that’s a topic for another day.
I was thinking about how quickly those goslings become geese and how the natural progression of life is from newborn to adulthood. That’s just the way things are.
Except in the church! We’re born again as new creations when we accept Christ as Saviour and Lord.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
The problem is too many get born again and opt to remain as infants.
But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?1 Corinthians 3:1-3
The problem is that we’re going downhill when we’re coasting in our faith walk. You can only coast uphill for a short time (and then only after a long run of momentum).
It’s no wonder that many Christians lead powerless lives. You don’t give life-transforming power to babies; you provide it to them as they prove they can handle it.
Some believers have sat in the pew for five, ten, twenty and even fifty years and are only babies in their faith. If they have truly accepted Christ, they have their salvation, but they have lived five, ten, twenty or fifty years on the verge of the potential of being what Jesus wants them to be and never making the step. They live powerless lives, going through the motions and wondering what all the excitement is about.
It doesn’t matter if you become a Christian at age five or eighty-five; you’re called to grow in your faith walk. It’s called a faith walk for a reason: infants crawl. You have to mature to walk.
If you want to see the power of God at work in your life, stop going through the motions. Start praying and reading your Bible. Take some time to serve at your local assembly. Get to work on those areas of your life where you know you are walking in sin, repent of them, confess them and ask His help in breaking away from them.
Until next time, I pray that you cease to be an infant and start growing.
Be blessed
